GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The Grand Rapids Lantern Competition at John Ball Zoo is promoted as a “breathtaking knowledge for all ages,” featuring handcrafted Asian lantern shows that illuminate the zoo.
The pageant, showcasing 55 lantern installations that span a 1-mile route as a result of the zoo, is the 1st of its type in Michigan. The new encounter opened to the general public on Wednesday, April 19. tonight at 7 p.m.
On Tuesday evening, the zoo place on a dazzling clearly show for the media of what the general community can be expecting when they go to to master the intersecting tale of wildlife and Asian lifestyle.

MLive was there to seize movie and photos of the huge lantern sculptures ranging from a dragon to a big butterfly-crammed tree as portion of a media preview. Some of the sculptures are interactive, with blowing bubbles and blinking eyeballs.
A number of of the lantern sculptures are placed directly future to their live counterparts, like the tigers, snowy owls and frogs.
Customers of Lotus Boyz GR, together with Ky Nguyen, Benny La, Steven Ngo, Anthony Tran, Alvin Ly and Huy Pham, ended up putting on performances, this kind of as the Chinese lion dance, and interacting with the zoo’s group.
The lion dancers will return on May well 20 and throughout Memorial Day weekend.
“The Grand Rapids Lantern Competition is a totally new practical experience,” Darci Napolillo, John Ball Zoo promotions and gatherings supervisor, explained to MLive about guests mastering more about Asian culture and wildlife. “These are amazingly wonderful in the course of the day and even better at night time.”
