Despite the fact that originally thought to have taken location at the Tour de France, the incident is really from the 1997 Critérium International, a three-stage race held in the south of France.
The horse’s cameo arrived on stage a single, and was afterwards remembered by sprinter Frédéric Moncassin in poetic depth. “When it jumped and landed on the street, it was impressive, the audio of the hooves, the sparks, the horse’s breath,” the Frenchman advised La Dépêche du Midi.
So spellbinding was the sight that, four many years later on, the film director Jean-Pierre Jeunet inserted the footage into his film Amélie, now a cult common in French cinema.
The stage was inevitably gained by Frenchman Stéphane Barthe, soon after the commissaires temporarily neutralised the race.
In the years that have followed, quite a few other farm animals have observed superstar with appearances in bicycle races.
At the 2011 Critérium du Dauphiné, Mikel Landa crashed at pace into a cow traipsing on the program. The Spaniard, then of Euskaltel-Euskadi, broke his collarbone and had to abandon the race.
In 2017, on stage 6 of the Tour of Poland, an untethered pony nestled alone in the peloton and ran as a result of a village, just before it was marshalled to the facet of the road by a rider.
An incident also arose before this year in the women’s race at Strade Bianche. En route to Siena, a horse – comparable in physical appearance to the just one from the 1997 Critérium International – emerged in front of SD Worx’s Demi Vollering, triggering the Dutchwoman to shriek loudly.
The errant horse led the race for a kilometre or so, before it slid out on a lefthand gravel bend and tumbled off the road.
“Zlatana is fantastic,” the horse’s operator wrote on Facebook right after the party. “A number of days of antibiotics, a ton of concern, but in the stop every little thing ended nicely.”
Farm animal sightings have even occur as recent as this week. On Monday, a cow chased the peloton in San Carlos, Costa Rica, with the incident caught on film from the race convoy.
