A quartet of Magellanic penguin chicks broke a 13-year-old history when they hatched — a person at a time about 6 times in May perhaps — at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens.

Their arrival marked the largest selection of hatchings in a single year considering that the opening of the zoo’s Tuxedo Coastline habitat in 2010. The zoo now has 33 Magellanic penguins, 14 of which have hatched on website.

Breaking the report “is a major achievement for our zoo and a testament to the abilities and perseverance of our animal treatment crew,” reported Kelly Rouillard, the zoo’s director of advertising and product sales. “By boosting recognition about the challenges penguins experience in the wild, we hope to inspire our site visitors to get motion and aid conservation initiatives.”
