You can probably count on warm snuggles, wet kisses, and constant companionship if you have a pet, but pet ownership also comes with plenty of uncertainty. In the event of an accident or illness involving your pet, insurance provides the peace of mind needed to sign off on your veterinarian’s recommended care — no matter the cost.
Since 2008, 24Petprotect (formerly known as 24PetWatch) has offered pet insurance for dogs and cats with a range of annual limits — from $2,500-$10,000. 24Petprotect is underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company, which has an A (Excellent) financial stability rating from AM Best. Keep reading to see if it’s the best pet insurance company for you.
Types of Pet Insurance Plans From 24Petprotect
You can choose from two main coverage options from 24Petprotect. Keep in mind that no provider covers a pet’s pre-existing conditions (defined as any condition occurring before coverage kicks in, or during a waiting period). That said, any illness or injury that is cured (meaning it’s symptom- and treatment-free for 180 days) is no longer considered pre-existing.
All coverage commences on the 15th day following purchase of the pet insurance policy.
Complete coverage: This comprehensive coverage takes everything from accidents and illness to behavioral issues — even hereditary and congenital conditions — into consideration and covers all related exam fees, diagnostics, and treatments (even chemotherapy). Accident coverage kicks in when there’s an emergency (a broken bone or lodged foreign object, plus myriad others in between), and illness coverage kicks in when minor (think UTI or digestive issues) and major (from arthritis and allergies to cancer) crop up. Treatment for inherited conditions that might not emerge until your pet is older, like heart disease and hip dysplasia, is covered, too. Finally, anxious and/or compulsive behavior (like excessive licking or destruction of your home) is also included. This policy does not cover cosmetic procedures (like tail docking and claw removal), breeding costs, or preventive care like annual exams, vaccines, and screenings.
Accident-only coverage: True to its name, this type of coverage protects against new injuries and emergencies directly related to an accident (from broken bones and torn ligaments to lodged foreign objects and toxic ingestions) and includes all fees related to exams, diagnostics, and treatment — from stem-cell treatment and surgery to acupuncture and chiropractic care. This type of policy does not cover cosmetic procedures; breeding costs; preventive care like annual exams, vaccines, and screenings; or any incident unrelated to an accident.
Additional Coverage Options (Riders) Available From 24Petprotect
Basic preventive care coverage: This rider covers the costs associated with basic preventive care up to the allowable maximum amount. This includes procedures like annual exams ($50), deworming ($20), and dental cleaning ($100), plus tests like canine heartworm/feline FELV ($20) and fecal ($20), as well as vaccines and titers including canine DHLPP/feline FERVP ($20) and canine rabies, Lyme, or feline FIP ($20). All procedures must be provided by a veterinarian listed in the care option selected on your declarations page.
Prime preventive care coverage: This rider covers the costs, up to the allowable maximum amount or actual cost incurred — whichever is less — associated with prime preventive care. This includes procedures like annual exams ($50), deworming ($20), heartworm/flea prevention ($25), health certificate ($25), and dental cleaning or spay/neuter ($150). It also includes tests like canine heartworm/feline FELV ($25), fecal ($25), blood ($25), and urinalysis ($25) as well as vaccines and titers including canine bordetella/feline FELV, canine DHLPP/feline FERVP ($25), canine rabies, Lyme, or feline FIP ($25). All procedures must be provided by a veterinarian listed in the care option selected on your declarations page.
How Much Does 24Petprotect Pet Insurance Cost?
The cost of pet insurance from 24Petprotect is based on a trio of factors: plan type, where you reside, and the specifics of your pet (including species, breed, and age).
24Petprotect allows clients to customize coverage to meet a range of budgets via choices for your annual deductible ($100, $250, $500 or $750) as well as reimbursement percentage (70%, 80%, or 90%). Keep in mind the higher the deductible, the lower the annual premium you’ll pay, and vice versa. You’ll get a 10% discount for insuring multiple pets.
On average, the cost of complete coverage for a two-year-old female English Setter in Massachusetts ranges from $17.85-$79.85 per month. Accident-only coverage for the same pet ranges from $7.98-$13.36 per month.
The cost of complete coverage for a two-year-old male Pit Bull in Ohio ranges from $26.80-$117.83 per month; accident-only coverage for the same pet ranges from $14.29-$53.41 per month.
The average cost of pet insurance for a dog, including both accident and illness coverage, is $53.34 per month. The sample quotes from 24Petprotect fall in that range, though depending on your deductible and reimbursement selections, they may be a tad pricier than average.

According to customer reviews on third-party sites like Consumer Affairs and Trustpilot, some people have found it difficult to get claims approved, while others had no issues at all. It appears most of the negative reviews relate to coverage limits, so make sure to read the terms and conditions of your policy carefully before applying.

24Petprotect Pet Insurance Frequently Asked Questions
If it’s recommended by your vet to treat a covered condition, 24Petprotect covers prescription food and supplements for dogs and cats. It does not cover prescription pet food or supplements for weight management, though.
Because raising your annual limits at a later date requires purchasing a new policy, pet parents should opt for the highest amount they’d imagine spending on veterinary care in a calendar year. If you’re unsure, 24Petprotect suggests an annual limit of $3,000.
Since there are no networks for pet insurance providers, 24Petprotect plans are accepted by licensed veterinarians (including specialists and emergency-care providers) across the United States and Canada.

How 24Petprotect Compares
24Petprotect vs. Figo Pet Insurance
Got an accident-prone pet? The Unlimited Plan from Figo boasts no cap on coverage and the option for 100% reimbursement for covered out-of-pocket veterinary expenses — all of which can be uploaded via the Figo Pet Cloud app. Coupled with shorter-than-average waiting periods for accident coverage to kick in — just one day versus on the 15th day following purchase 24Petprotect — this translates to lots of perks for pet parents.
That said, if you don’t have (or aren’t willing to share) a year’s worth of vet records when submitting your application, or hope to get even just a little help covering the cost of getting your pet spayed or neutered, 24Petprotect might be a better bet.

24Petprotect vs. American Kennel Club Pet Insurance
Proud pet parents of any pooch, not just registered purebreds, will enjoy the comprehensive coverage from American Kennel Club (AKC) Pet Insurance — especially those furry friends with pre-existing conditions (which AKC covers after a one-year waiting period).
Got a senior pet? Those ages 9+ will be eligible for accident insurance from AKC Pet Insurance, but that’s it. If a more comprehensive plan is needed, plus the option of preventive care, stick with 24Petprotect.

24Petprotect vs. Nationwide Pet Insurance
For pet parents whose creature companions extend beyond cats and dogs, Nationwide Pet Insurance offers coverage for a whole host of animals including birds, lizards, and horses — plus no age limits for cats and dogs. And, while Nationwide provides accident and illness coverage in all 50 states (24Petprotect has fine print for residents of California and Maine), preventive treatment and wellness plans — for things like annual exams and some vaccines — are not available. If you want those options, stick with 24Petprotect.
